Getting a Tattoo in Prague: What You Need to Know

Prague is one of Europe's best cities for tattoo tourism. Here's how to find a reputable studio, what to budget, and how to make the most of your visit to Kafka INK.

Prague has become one of the most popular cities in Europe for tattoo tourism — and for good reason. The city has a strong concentration of technically skilled artists, prices that are competitive with Western Europe, and a density of studios that creates genuine competition on quality. If you’re visiting Prague and considering getting tattooed, here’s everything you need to know to do it right.

Plan Further Ahead Than You Think

Good Prague tattoo artists book out weeks to months in advance. If you’re planning a trip and want to get tattooed by a specific artist or at a specific studio, reach out at least 4-6 weeks before your arrival. This gives you time to discuss your idea, get a design prepared, confirm availability, and pay the deposit that secures your slot. Walk-ins are possible — and we do accept them when slots are open — but for custom work, especially anything requiring a design consultation, booking in advance is essential. Send your idea, placement, approximate size, and any reference images when you make contact. The more information you provide, the faster the process moves.

What to Budget

Tattoo pricing in Prague varies by studio and artist experience. At established studios like Kafka INK, expect hourly rates comparable to good studios in Berlin or Amsterdam — we don’t undercut on quality. A small-to-medium custom piece (2-4 hours) will typically run €200-500 depending on complexity. Larger work — half sleeves, back pieces, detailed realism — is quoted by the project after consultation. Avoid any studio quoting suspiciously low rates for complex work. Cheap tattooing is not cheap in the long run: fixing or covering poor work costs more than the original price difference. The consultation at Kafka INK is free and includes a clear price estimate before any commitment.

Healing When You’re Travelling

Getting tattooed while travelling requires some extra planning around aftercare. A fresh tattoo needs to stay out of pools, lakes, and the sea for at least 2-3 weeks — so if your trip involves swimming, time your appointment for the end of the visit. Pack or purchase quality tattoo aftercare: a fragrance-free gentle soap and a good unscented moisturiser. Avoid tight clothing over the area, especially in warm weather. And if you’re flying home within a few days of getting tattooed, keep the tattoo moisturised and out of direct sun during travel. We send all clients home with written aftercare instructions, and we’re reachable by email if anything concerns you during the healing process.
