Piercing Care Guide

How Long Do Piercings Take to Heal?
Most surface piercings take 6–8 weeks to heal. Cartilage piercings — such as helix, tragus, or nose — can take 6–12 months due to reduced blood supply. Inconsistent aftercare can extend healing significantly and increase the risk of complications.
Signs Your Piercing Is Healing
Initial swelling, redness, and some fluid discharge are normal. As healing progresses, swelling subsides and discharge stops. Mild itching and light crusting are positive signs. If pain increases rather than decreases over time, or if you notice spreading redness or an unpleasant smell, seek professional advice.
Why Aftercare Matters
A piercing is an open wound. Without consistent cleaning, bacteria can enter and cause infection — which is painful, delays healing, and may require the piercing to be removed and a course of antibiotics to treat. Proper aftercare dramatically reduces this risk.
The Core Routine
Clean the piercing 2–3 times daily with sterile saline solution or a piercer-recommended antiseptic. Wash your hands before touching the area. Do not rotate the jewellery unnecessarily — this causes trauma and slows healing. Only touch the piercing when cleaning it.
Ear and Cartilage Piercings
Ear lobe piercings heal in roughly 6–8 weeks. Cartilage piercings are slower and more prone to irritation bumps. Sleep on a travel pillow to avoid pressing the piercing against bedding. Change pillowcases regularly to reduce bacterial exposure.
Mouth and Lip Piercings
Oral piercings need extra care due to the high bacterial environment of the mouth. Rinse with an alcohol-free antibacterial mouthwash after every meal and before sleeping. Avoid smoking, alcohol, and spicy or acidic foods for the first few weeks. Lip piercings have both an inner and outer side — clean both.
Nose Piercings
Clean both the outside and inside of a nose piercing carefully. Avoid blowing your nose forcefully in the early weeks and keep skincare products away from the area. Nostril piercings typically heal in 4–6 months; septum piercings are often faster at 6–8 weeks.
Belly Button and Nipple Piercings
Navel piercings are slow to heal — often 6–12 months — due to constant friction from clothing. Wear loose, breathable clothing and avoid waistbands pressing into the area. Nipple piercings follow the same core routine; avoid abrasive fabrics and tight clothing during the healing period.
What Not to Do
Do not pick at or forcibly remove crust — this damages new tissue and delays healing. Avoid submerging the piercing in pools, rivers, or the sea. Do not change jewellery until the piercing is fully healed, and have a professional perform the first change if you are unsure.
